Getting Started With Clean Beauty

Sometimes your journey to clean products really stinks. That was definitely the case for our family in 2015! Let me explain.

I remember riding in the car with my son who was ten years old. I began wondering why my car smelled like onions and pickles and, alas, there was no burger anywhere in sight.

“What is that smell?!” I shrieked.

“What smell?” Then it hit me.

There was no burger in the car. It was his armpits. Oh boy. Time to get some deo for the B.O. for that kid.

Then I remembered something. Somewhere I had read that we should avoid aluminum in deodorant. I had no idea why.

So I began researching this and found out a few things. First, our bodies are meant to sweat. Aluminum is an antiperspirant that “plugs” your sweat ducts and reduces sweating. Sweating is one way that our body detoxifies. So don’t be afraid to sweat. (More on “the stink”later.)

Secondly, it’s really us women who need to be thinking about avoiding aluminum in our deodorant. If you want to read more about this, check this out. Basically, we’re plugging up the area right around our breast tissue. Also, parabens in most deodorants have been shown to mimic estrogen in the body. And, yikes, these same ingredients have been found in breast tumors.

Finally, deodorant was just the tip of the toxic iceberg. I began researching personal care products that I was using. It was shocking to find how many of them contained ingredients linked to health harm.

Why on EARTH would I want to use these products? Was there even a solution out there? This is what led me to Beautycounter. I’m so thankful that the smell of my son’s underarms began my journey to safer products for me and my family. And now I share them with you. Because knowledge is POWER. Find out about the most common ingredients to look for on the shelves so that you can avoid them altogether! And remember, just because you sweat doesn’t mean that you can’t neutralize odor!!!!

Here are my top three favorite Clean Deodorants:

Best Overall: Beautycounter Clean Deo (Clean Rose is my favorite scent. Bonus: it’s refillable!)

Best on a Budget: Crystal Mineral Unscented Deodorant Stick (Stick with unscented, as “fragrance” can be a bit misleading)

Best Unisex: Native Deodorant (If your man wants to clean up his act, Native has some great offerings. Charcoal is my fave.)
